Alex Attwood, chairman of the moderate nationalist SDLP party, insisted the
timing of Mr Adams visit to Cuba was wrong.
The West Belfast MLA claimed the arrests of three Irish
republicans in Colombia for allegedly training left-wing
guerrillas and the anti-terrorist backlash following the attacks
on America had strengthened US opposition to the trip.
``In the aftermath of September 11 the visit is, at the very
least, considered ill-timed and ill-judged,`` Mr Attwood
said.
``The fallout from Colombia and Cuba will be substantial
and enduring, in America and in Ireland.``
