Sinn Féin president Mr Gerry Adams has invited Cuban
president Mr Fidel Castro to Belfast.
He made the invitation during a five-hour
meeting with Mr Castro on Tuesday. Mr
Adams has now ended his three-day visit
to Cuba.
The two discussed the situation in the
Third World and the issue of
globalisation, human and democratic
rights, baseball and football.
Mr Adams, whose visit drew criticism
from some US officials, met with other
Cuban officials, including foreign minister Mr Felipe Perez
Roque.
The US government warned in September an Adams trip to
Cuba would raise troubling questions if it turned out the IRA
had links to the FARC (Armed Revolutionary Forces of
Colombia), which Washington labels a terrorist group.
During the visit, the Sinn Féin leader called for an end to the
US trade embargo of the Caribbean island.
