Fuentes de inteligencia china afirman que un doctor español que recientemente examinara a Fidel Castro dijo parte de la verdad--aunque omitió datos importantes--cuando dijo que el dirigente comunista no tiene cancer.

Jose Luis Garcia Sabrido le informó a los reporteros en Madrid el pasado martes que Castro se recupera de una cirugía intestinal y que no se planeaba una nueva operación. El médico dijo que el dictador cubano se encuentra en buenas condiciones físicas y que quiere regresar a su trabajo.

Las fuentes chinas describen la situación de una manera bien diferente. Afirman que Castro tuvo cáncer, pero fue temporalmente curado mediante un controversial tratamiento con cartílagos de tiburón.

Al dictador de 80 años se le habría tratado con enemas de cartílago de tiburón. El cartílago de tiburón se cree contiene una proteína que inhibe la angiogenesis (rápido crecimiento de los vasos sanguíneos), que son asociados con el crecimiento de tumores malignos así como como con el normal desarrollo y la curación de las heridas. Sin angiogenesis, los tumores cancerosos se reducen y mueren.

The cartilage under a shark's dorsal fin and near its tail is supposedly most potent. Chinese folk medicine has long prized the fin, crediting it with almost magical properties.

The popular American television news magazine, 60 Minutes, reported on Cuba's shark cartilage cancer research and therapy back in the 1990s. Veteran correspondent Mile Wallace narrated the segment, which launched a mini-shark cartilage food supplement industry--and boosted the credibility of natural medicine, generally.

Cancer specialists generally doubt that natural shark cartilage, administered rectally or orally, can be effective angiogenesis blockers.

Castro underwent surgery for an unspecified illness in July. At the time of the operation, he handed power to his brother, Raul.

Castro has not appeared in public since then and was last seen in a video broadcast in late October. The Cuban government says Castro's health is a state secret, fueling speculation about his condition.

America's director of national intelligence, John Negroponte, recently said Castro is very ill and could die within months.
